fall in california
I’m a PNW girl at heart, so Southern California “fall” has been sad for me. I’m used to leaves changing colors and falling, chilly temperatures, and cozy winter storms. And there’s none of that down here! (besides the occasional yellowish-red tree, or tsunami warnings that don’t make good on their promise).
So all of my complaining begs the question: how will I get into a fall mindset? I’ve come up with a couple ideas in the past month that have been making me feel more at home (where it’s literally 45 degrees and raining while it’s 80 and UV 6 here) so keep reading!
I make my dorm room as cozy as possible!
I always keep my blinds closed so that it’s slightly darker (trust that the sun is bright as day outside my window though) and keep the smaller lamps on for soft lighting. I just got these super cute fairy lights from Amazon and Elaina and I hung them up last night and it levels up the room more than I imagined!
Get back into reading!
I am currently reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, which I got from a used bookstore. (Double points for fall vibes for going to a cozy bookstore instead of ordering it online). I watched the movie earlier this year and a few months ago I started following this girl on Instagram, @livlivinlife, who is literally Eat, Pray, Love - ing her life right now except she’s a British girl traveling the United States. She’s now done with her abridged version of the trip but I enjoyed watching her document it on social media! In terms of the book, I’m still in the first section, the Italy section, and I really love it. Usually, I’m a YA romance book girly, sometimes a murder mystery, so I love it when I find a good nonfiction book. (If this is you, too, then I highly recommend Dinner For Vampires by Bethany Joy Lenz aka Haley from One Tree Hill about her time in a cult it’s *so* interesting).
Watching fall/Christmas movies on my projector in my dorm
I said briefly in my October favorites article that my mom sent me a projector for my dorm room, and I’ve been using it every night since I got it. There’s something about using a projector that just screams fall, I can’t put my finger on why. It’s just the essence of cozy (“cozy” count for this article must be around 10). Last weekend my friends and I watched the new Jonas Brothers Christmas movie, before that we watched The Holiday and lots of Gilmore Girls.
Wearing fall outfits whenever I can
We’re coming up on a little cold/rain front here in SoCal for the next week, so I have an excuse to crack out my sweaters and sweatshirts! If I have any complaints about this beautiful campus and super cool city, it’s that it’s too hot here. I miss the weather at home in Washington, especially September and early November temperatures.
So that’s my little list! Wishing everyone a cOzY fall and happy holidays!
